The Physician

Dr. Justin Khetani, MD FRCSC

Dr. Khetani's medical life has been spent on the anatomy of the head, neck and nose: an Honours BSc at McMaster University, his Doctor of Medicine at the University of Toronto, a five-year McMaster surgical residency, and Royal College certification in 2012. He has practised in hospital ever since, operating in Burlington and Hamilton.

His subspecialty fellowship training in rhinology and anterior skull base surgery at the University of Alberta (the surgical discipline of the nose, the sinuses, and the structures at the base of the skull) remains the centre of his practice, his teaching and his research. His clinical focus today is surgical: rhinoplasty, septoplasty and endoscopic sinus surgery, alongside advanced care for chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps, including the assessment of newer biologic treatment options.

A small physician-led aesthetics practice, Khetani Medical Aesthetics, founded in 2022, continues to offer select non-surgical treatments.

Canadian Rhinologic Society · Centres of Excellence

Expedited care for nasal polyps (CRSwNP).

Dr. Khetani's Burlington practice appears on the Canadian Rhinologic Society's Centres of Excellence list for chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyposis. Listed centres commit to seeing patients whose nasal polyps are confirmed on CT within four months of referral, so that medical therapy, biologic treatment and surgery can be weighed without a long wait.

Academic & Research

Teaching the surgeons who come next.

Fellowship-level training programs exist so that complex surgical skills are examined, refined and passed on. Dr. Khetani helps run one, and the practice teaches surgical residents as well as fellows.

Dr. Khetani is Co-Director of the Rhinology & Endoscopic Skull Base Surgery Fellowship at McMaster University (an advanced training program registered with the North American Skull Base Society) and an Assistant Clinical Professor (Adjunct) at McMaster, where he has taught surgical residents since 2013.

As a surgical member of the McMaster Skull Base Group (MacMINS), he works within a multidisciplinary team of otolaryngologists, neurosurgeons and allied specialists, a group designated a Multidisciplinary Team of Distinction by the North American Skull Base Society.

His research activity centres on chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP): he is an active investigator in Phase 3 clinical trials, contributes to national specialist advisory work on emerging therapies, and collaborates on research into AI-assisted diagnostic imaging for nasal endoscopy. Patients of the practice can ask to be considered for studies that fit their condition.

Team & Clinic

A deliberately small office.

The Burlington office on Plains Road East is where consultations, assessments and follow-up visits happen; surgery itself takes place in hospital. Dr. Khetani is supported by an experienced clinical and administrative team.

The office is kept deliberately small: the people who arrange your consultation, support your assessment and answer your follow-up questions are the same people each time you call. Two of them, Brandi and Ana, are introduced below.

The phone is answered promptly at any hour: an AI phone assistant takes the call, records what you need and routes it to the right person, so nothing waits for a voicemail to be checked. How calls are handled.

The team

Brandi

Clinic operations

Brandi is in charge of the clinic's day-to-day operations.

  • Usually the first person you deal with: incoming referrals, appointment scheduling, and the practical questions that come before and after a visit.
  • Coordinates hospital surgery dates and pre-operative paperwork once an operation is planned.
  • Prepares the written quotation for uninsured procedures and explains what is, and is not, covered by OHIP.

Ana

Medical assistant · clinical research

Ana is a medical assistant. She obtains patient histories and is involved in clinical research trials and research projects.

  • Before you see Dr. Khetani, Ana takes your history: what is bothering you, for how long, what has already been tried, and your medications and allergies.
  • Supports the practice's research program, helping coordinate the clinical trials and research projects the practice takes part in.
  • A first point of contact for patients who would like to be considered for a study. Clinical trials & research.

How He Practises

Assessment first. Restraint always.

If an operation isn't likely to help you, you'll hear that plainly, and you'll hear why.

Every recommendation in this practice is planned against the questions a surgeon must answer before any procedure: is this operation appropriate for the anatomy in front of me, does the likely benefit justify the risk, and is there a more conservative path to the same goal?

That is as true for a rhinoplasty consultation as it is for sinus disease. Surgery is offered when it is the right tool, and declined, with an honest explanation, when it isn't.

The options are presented so that you are in charge of the decision: each one with what it can offer and what it costs you in risk, recovery or ongoing effort, side by side. If you would rather take time and read independently before deciding, the practice points you to national, non-commercial resources rather than pressing for an answer.

Begin with an honest assessment.

A consultation doesn't commit you to surgery. It exists to answer one question well: what, if anything, is right for you.
